About ABPANC

The American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc., (ABPANC) is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1985 by the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) for the purpose of sponsoring certification programs for qualified registered nurses caring for patients who have experienced sedation, analgesia, and anesthesia. ABPANC sponsors the Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN®) and the Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA®) programs. ABPANC’s programs and services are focused on achieving its mission and vision.

Who We Are

ABPANC is the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the profession of perianesthesia nursing. We provide certification credentials for post anesthesia nurses and ambulatory perianesthesia nurses.

CPAN® is our certification program for Certified Post Anesthesia Nurses.

CAPA® is our certification program for Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurses.

What We Do

The American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc. (ABPANC) sponsors and manages the CPAN® and CAPA® certification programs that are designed to validate knowledge gained through professional education and work experience. We have developed nationally recognized certification programs that promote the practice of perianesthesia nursing and meet stringent standards established by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification.

CPAN and CAPA are nationally recognized credentials that demonstrate compliance with the highest quality standards in the nursing profession and validate specialized knowledge and experience as a certified perianesthesia nurse.

ABPANC provides awareness for our profession in support of nursing activities, hospital administration, and patient education. We believe that when perianesthesia nurses demonstrate their knowledge and experience through certification, hospitals earn a reputation for providing the best care by highly qualified professionals, and patients feel comfortable knowing they are being cared for by perianesthesia nurses who are committed to being the best they can be.
