ABPANC Advocacy Award Winners and Stories

2016 Recipient of the ABPANC Advocacy Award

ABPANC announced the winner of its annual Advocacy Award for promoting excellence in perianesthesia nursing at the CPAN®/CAPA® Celebration Luncheon at ASPAN National Conference in Philadelphia. Nancy Carr Atkinson, RN, CAPA, is the 2016 winner and is being recognized for her valuable contributions in promoting and practicing quality patient care in perianesthesia nursing.

The ABPANC Advocacy Award identifies a CPAN and/or CAPA certified nurse who demonstrates personal compassion and commitment, combined with knowledge and experience gained through clinical problem solving. This person regularly goes above and beyond their normal job responsibilities and takes initiative as a patient advocate.

In one example, Nancy was taking care of a 19-year-old patient who was admitted to outpatient surgery for removal of hardware from his clavicle, which was visible through an open wound. His clothes were stiff and it appeared he had not bathed in a long time. Upon discharge, Nancy noticed that his shoes had a half dollar sized hole in the sole, matching the hole in his sock. With respect and compassion, Nancy mentioned to him those shoes must have been his favorite and served him well, but her son had just outgrown a nearly-new pair of shoes that same size, which could be brought to the surgery center in a matter of minutes if he would like to have them. The patient left with a huge smile on his face saying that now he could get where he needed to go without his feet hurting.

Nancy Carr Atkinson works at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in the outpatient surgery center in Edgewood, Kentucky. She was selected from many qualified nominations because of her consistent contribution above and beyond normal job responsibilities that directly impact the quality of patient care. Nancy received a beautiful Lladro Statue of a nurse, framed certificate, and a scholarship to cover her next recertification fee. ABPANC also awarded Nancy’s unit with a check for $350 to be used for certification fees, continuing education, books or study guides. Nancy Maushart, RN, CPAN, CAPA nominated Nancy for the award and received a $100 cash award.
