Stacy Guthro | RN, CPAN
My Certification Story
Taking the CPAN test for me was a challenging, yet rewarding journey. I have been a nurse for almost 25 years with the last 18 spent in PACU. I love being a PACU nurse and have pondered taking the certification exam for years. I finally got up the courage. It started with a commitment to myself, then I began to share my plans with my family, supervisor and peers. I was the only one in our department preparing for the CPAN at the time, so I was unsure of what to expect. I was nervous and seeking all the support I could receive. After 6 months of studying, lots of prayers and much support, I was able to pass the CPAN certification exam.
My Study Strategies
In studying for the CPAN exam, I relied upon the tools that were readily available from ABPANC. My study plan was for 6 months prior to my test date. I worked from a variety of books listed in Appendix D: Study References. I also utilized the Practice Exams available, which were a huge help, in that they were designed like the actual test. My biggest strategy, was to review the content I was most familiar with and focus on the subjects I was least knowledgeable about.
My Benefits
What a confidence booster! I can’t even begin to express the pride one feels after this great accomplishment. It takes time and dedication. Once you commit to taking the test, you must follow through with it. Pursuing the certification for yourself, both personally and professionally, helps to validate the skills and knowledge that you have obtained over the time spent in your specialty area. Don’t pass up this opportunity!
My Advice
If you do not succeed on your first attempt, DON’T GIVE UP! Look back on your “Preparing to Take the Exam” journey. Ask yourself, “What could I have done differently?” Focus on those areas while the content you have studied is still fresh in your head. So, what are you waiting for? Pull out that calendar, set the date to retake the test. You will be so proud that you did.
