Spring 2017 ABPANC Article
I hope that 2017 is treating you well, and you are gearing up for a great spring! I want to take a few minutes to ask you to reflect back on your professional achievements for 2016, and on the challenge I made last year asking you to look at your career and to get CPAN® and/or CAPA® certified – or if you already had your certification, to challenge others in your work unit to get their certification.
So, how did you do with this challenge? If you succeeded; congratulations! If you didn’t, then I am asking you consider the same challenge for 2017. Certification does make a difference for each certification holder, their peers, work units and hospitals – but most importantly, to your patients and their families. And in support of the certification process, ABPANC is pleased to announce our new CPAN/CAPA Mobile Study App, which makes it very convenient and easy to study for the exams, as well as simply keep current on the latest and best practices in perianesthesia patient care. Also, if you have an interest, we have great opportunities to get involved with the committees of CPAN and CAPA certified nurses that write the certification examinations.
Looking at the spring calendar, there are few major events that have either come our way, or are coming our way I would like to call out. First is Certified Nurses Day, March 19th. As you know, ABPANC supports and recognizes certified nurses throughout the year with educational resources, posters, awards and scholarships. On this year’s Certified Nurses Day, the winners of our new Certification Achievement Award will be announced. This award program recognizes units that have at least 75% of their perianesthesia nurses CPAN or CAPA certified. Congratulations to this year’s achievement winners!
Also, later in the spring, at this year’s ASPAN Conference in Indianapolis (April 30th through May 4th), we will announce the winners of the 2017 Shining Star and Advocacy Award at the annual CPAN/CAPA Celebration luncheon being held on Monday, May 1st. The Shining Star Award recognizes ASPAN Components for supporting and encouraging CPAN and CAPA certification at the local levels. The Advocacy Award recognizes the CPAN and/or CAPA certified nurse who exemplifies leadership as a patient advocate. You can read about these awards on the ABPANC website. One last request – be proud of your certification. You worked hard for it! And don’t forget to tell your patients and their families about your certification. It will help comfort them in knowing that you have an enhanced and specialized skill that will provide them with the best care possible. It’s a great dose of medicine for them.
In closing, I would like to say that it continues to be an honor to serve on ABPANC’s Board of Directors as the Public Member. As I am sure that you will agree, ABPANC continues to raise the bar with certification efforts that support perianesthesia nurses. There are a lot of great initiatives and events happening this spring, and I do hope that you take advantage of them and stay connected with us.
