History

ABPANC History

In 1980, the American Society for Perianesthesia Nursing convened a Certification Committee to investigate the feasibility of specialty certification for the perianesthesia nurse. From that Committee work, the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification, Inc. was created. Since then, ABPANC has administered excellent certification programs that contribute to the perianesthesia nurse obtaining the knowledge and experience to deliver a high level of quality patient care.

ABPANC currently certifies more than 12,500 perianesthesia nurses who have earned the CPAN® and/or CAPA® credentials. The organization has also maintained national accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) since 2004.
