ABPANC Scholarship Program

A limited number of scholarships are available each year for perianesthesia nurses to obtain:

  • Certification Fees ($314)
  • Recertification Fees ($194)

Scholarship Application

Scholarships for Initial Certification

Policies:

  1. The annual window for applying for a Scholarship for Certification Fees ($314) opens May 1 and ends at 11:59 pm eastern time June 30 for the Fall Cycle, and opens December 1 and ends at 11:59pm eastern time January 31 for the Spring Cycle.
  2. The scholarship application is available on ABPANC’s website at www.cpancapa.org and must be submitted electronically by the deadline to abpanc@proexam.org applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
  3. All eligibility requirements to sit for initial certification must be met at the time the scholarship recipient completes the online examination application.
  4. To be eligible for an ABPANC Scholarship for Certification Fees ($314), no monetary support for certification is available from the applicant’s employer.
  5. Along with the application, an essay (no longer than 300 words) must be submitted describing what becoming CPAN or CAPA certified would mean to him/her (initial certification) and what he/she see as the benefits of being certified (recertification).
  6. An ABPANC check will be issued to Scholarship recipients for $314 (initial certification fees).
  7. The Scholarship recipient must register for an examination administered in the following Fall or Spring registration windows or the Scholarship becomes null and void and it is expected the monies will be returned to ABPANC.
  8. The ABPANC Awards Workteam is responsible for reviewing all applications.
  9. The number of ABPANC Scholarship may vary from year to year and will be based on the amount of money budgeted each year.
  10. Applicants will be notified by July 15 for the Fall Cycle and by February 15 for the Spring Cycle whether or not they will receive a Scholarship;
  11. Scholarship recipients will receive an ABPANC check for Certification Fees ($314); the recipient must register for the examination using a credit card.
  12. An individual can only apply and receive an ABPANC scholarship once.
  13. Individuals who received a Scholarship for initial Certification Fees are not eligible to apply for a Scholarship for Recertification Fees.

Policies regarding Applicants who have been unsuccessful on a previous examination attempt.

  1. Applicants must submit a completed electronic ABPANC Scholarship Application form during the application window (as identified in #1 under “policy” above) to abpanc@proexam.org that includes:
    1. Complete contact information for Scholarship Applicant;
    2. Verification from the nurse manager that the eligibility requirements (as described in the Certification Candidate Handbook) to sit for the CPAN or CAPA examination have been met as follows:
      1. current, unrestricted RN Licensure in the US or any of its territories which use the NCSBN NCLEX exam as the basis for determining RN licensure;
      2. direct perianesthesia nursing experience as a RN for a minimum of 1800 hours within the two years prior to application for the examination;
    3. Verification from the nurse manager or HR Department staff that no monetary support is available from employer for seeking initial certification;
    4. an essay (no more than 300 words)
      1. (for first-time test takers) describing what becoming CPAN or CAPA certified would mean to them and what they see as the benefits of being certified.
      2. (for unsuccessful test takers) reflecting on their previous exam experience and describing what they would do differently in order to be successful.
  2. Following the review of all scholarship applications and a subsequent decision by the Award Workteam. ABPANC staff will:
    1. Put in a request for checks to be cut;
    2. Email recipients that they have been selected for a Scholarship for Certification Fees ($314);
    3. Send a letter to recipients with check enclosed;
    4. Send a letter to notify those who will not receive a scholarship.

Scholarships for Recertification Fees through the Continual Learning Program

Policies:

  1. Current members of the ABPANC Board of Directors are not eligible for a scholarship for Recertification Fees.
  2. The Scholarship for Recertification Fees ($194) may only be used to recertify through ABPANC’s continual learning program.
  3. The annual window for applying for a Scholarship for Recertification Fees is identified in #1 “Policy” above.
  4. The Scholarship Application is available on ABPANC’s website at www.cpancapa.org and must be submitted electronically to abpanc@proexam.org by the deadline; applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
  5. All eligibility requirements for recertification must be met at the time the scholarship recipient completes the online recertification application.
  6. To be eligible for an ABPANC Scholarship for Recertification Fees ($194), no monetary support for recertification is available from the applicant’s employer. Individuals who received a Scholarship from ABPANC for initial Certification Fees are not eligible to apply for a Scholarship for Recertification Fees.
  7. Along with the application, an essay (no longer than 300 words) must be submitted describing how he/she have promoted CPAN or CAPA certification during his/her three year period of certification. Such activities may include those described in the Recertification Handbook under the heading, How to Earn Contact Hours, i.e., CPANs and CAPAs as Teachers, Authors, Facilitators of Quality Care, and Resource Leaders. Other activities may include such things as serving as an ABPANC Coach or ALRT member, conveying certification information at component meetings, serving as a study buddy, posting certification related materials on the unit, participation on a Role Delineation Study Task Force or Passing Point Study, etc.
  8. Activities related to CPANs and CAPAs as Continuing Education and Academic Students do not apply.
  9. An ABPANC check will be issued to scholarship recipients for $194.
  10. The scholarship recipient must use the scholarship to recertify through the Continual Learning Program within the upcoming Fall or Spring Recertification Cycle in which they are due or the scholarship becomes null and void. It is expected the monies will be returned to ABPANC.
  11. The ABPANC Awards Workteam is responsible for reviewing all applications.

    2. Verification from the nurse manager that the following eligibility requirements for recertification of CPAN or CAPA status have been met as follows:
      1. Current, unrestricted RN Licensure in the US or any of its territories which use the NCSBN NCLEX exam as the basis for determining RN licensure;
      2. 1200 hours of perianesthesia clinical experience within the three year certification period
    3. Verification from the nurse manager or HR Department staff that the employer offers no monetary support for seeking CAPA/CPAN recertification;
    4. An essay (no more than 300 words) must be submitted describing how the individual has promoted CPAN or CAPA certification during the current three year period of certification.
  2. Following the review of all scholarship applications and a subsequent decision by the Award Workteam as identified above the ABPANC staff will:
    1. Put in a request for checks to be cut.
    2. Send a letter to recipients with check enclosed.
    3. Send a letter to notify those who will not receive a scholarship.
